My dream writing space

type writer

At the minute I hanker after a  corner desk from John Lewis to write on . But sadly I have a scrappy little table in the kitchen where my PC is and it faces a wall. I long to write overlooking the ocean in a glass walled house whilst my children play below me on the beach. The sea would inspire me and I would feel warmed by the sun and there would be a slight breeze coming in form the ocean. There would be white flowers everywhere and my desk would be glass and curved.   I … [Read more...]

Why I like used books

High pile of hardcover books

I like brand new books with their spine unbent. I like to be the very first to open them wondering about the wonders written inside. I like the smell of new books. I can't describe it at all but I do love it. It's a combination of clean and promising. Rubbish description I know! Funnily enough though I like used text books more. They sometimes  smell a little bit of coffee and being stored, and I love that smell! I like to  think someone else has read them, loved them and learnt from them. … [Read more...]

Where is the best place to buy books?

books paris

As you know I love books. I love to have a new to me book and wonder whatever delights may be inside. I like to look at the cover for a long time before I start. I felt like excitement about books since I first learned to read. There used to be bookshops on every high street but now apart from one or two big chain bookshops they aren’t easy to find. I think this is very sad, I used to love to browse for hours , find new authors and just smell new books. But I do delight in kindles and being … [Read more...]

Should a child have a kindle?

kindle fire

Recently a blogger I know wrote about kindles and how she would never have EVER one. Her arguments ranged from they didn't smell or feel like books and they couldn't be shared in the way physical books can. She had quite a few people agree with her post and write nostalgically and sentimentally about books they had loved. Obviously I completely adore real, physical books. Over the last 3 years I have written several hundred book reviews on here and each one has enriched my life in some way … [Read more...]

Romantic Irish writers

Of all my poetry books that I return to again and again I have to say two Irish men steal my heart. I love Yeats and I adore the wonderful Louis MacNeice. Yeats stole my heart when I was young and idealistic, easily heartbroken and vulnerable in my late teens. I would read him by the hour, songs of lost loves and tough loves and hearts a breaking. Such a handsome man too! ‘You have spread my dreams under your fee tread softly because you tread upon my dreams.’ From He … [Read more...]

Review: Will Solvit

willsolvit

My son was sent the first four Will Solvit novels to have a read of for the purpose of theis review. It is testament to how much he enjoyed them that I have just popped on Amazon and bought the entire set!  Instead of the RRP of £60 I got it for just £14 so I am delighted with this. Will is the brainchild of the rather fabulously named Zed Storm (that CANNOT be his real name, it's way too cool!) The most exciting thing about the stories for my son was the little decoder which came with … [Read more...]
