The new Ladybird Read It Yourself series, a comprehensive, accessible and successful graded reading series, launched its new paperback books on 4th July. For the first time, the series included licensed characters from popular children’s brands such as Peppa Pig, Moshi Monsters and Peter Rabbit.
Not for minute do I think introducuing these commercial characters diminshed the range. It is already packed with the classics the Pied Piper and the Wizard of Ox. Adding Moshi Monsters only opens it up to more children who maybe encouraged to read because of the familiarity.
The books are graded into four levels that progressively introduce wider vocabulary and longer stories as the reader’s ability grows. The stories are also carefully structured to include many commonly used words that are vital for first reading and are supported by beautiful illlustrations. What striuck me was how colourful and glossy the pages were making them really attractive to younger readers.
The series includes 50 titles which were published in paperback and ebook format simultaneously in July. There is also be a Ladybird Read it Yourself app available on Apple and Google devices. This follows the same premise as the printed book, but will also allow children to tap on any words they have difficulty with to hear how it’s pronounced and even record themselves reading the stories to help them practice. Kids love some interactivity as it adds an exciting dimension to their reading.
My daughter loved reading Luvli and the Glump-a-tron The questions at the end of the book helped me check out her understanding of the text and the little quiz at the end was fun.
I loved that she also read The Wizard of Oz one of my all time favourites and it was a really simple to read but accurate version of the story with lovely, bright colourful pictures. Shealos loved The Pied Piiper but said it made her feel sad.
The books are by Ladybird and cost £4.99 each
