WHAT IS A STORYSACK®?
A Storysack® is a large cloth bag containing a good quality child’s picture book with supporting materials to stimulate reading activities. To bring the book to life, soft toys of the main characters, artefacts relating to items in the story, a non-fiction book relating to the fiction theme, an audio tape and a language game based on the book are included. Additionally a card of ideas is inserted, suggesting to parents ways they may develop listening, reading and writing skills using the contents of the Storysack®.
The ‘sacks’ are made by the parents themselves and, once 80 or so have been completed, are lent out on a library basis to parents of pre-school and reception class age children to use at home.
The aim of a Storysack® is to give a parent the confidence to enjoy books and reading together with their child, thus becoming a combined learning experience. Not every parent finds it easy to read stories but, with the supporting materials a Storysack® offers, all parents can successfully share books with their child at a variety of levels.
At present the project has spread fromWestleaPrimary School in Swindon, the school from where the idea originated, to hundreds of schools nationwide and new schools are adopting their own versions of Storysacks® weekly. Additionally, the concept has been taken up by libraries, nurseries, playgroups, childminder groups and children’s charities.
The interest in Storysacks® has been amazing and the popularity and enthusiastic response has surprised everyone. Such has been the interest that the Basic Skills Agency has generously sponsored a National Support Project. This has allowed the creator, Neil Griffiths, to promote the concept at workshops and conferences throughout the world.
