Housework Blues : How to cope with the mental and emotional challenge of keeping a home by Danielle Raine addresses an issue I have been experiencing all my adult life. I have it everyday. It effects me everyday and it make me feel a little bit rubbish about myself, every single day. Time to be addressed? Absolutely.

Housework Blues tackles our sorry, despairing, sad,  often hate filled relationship with domestic tasks. Okay I know this isn’t everyones relationship with their house keeping but I know if your reading this review it’s probably becuase you identify with this issue at least a little.

This isn’t a book of household tips and tricks although it does contain a few pearls…No, it is about tackling your blocks. I identified most with the section on motivation (my lack of) and Danielle soon whipped me into shape. She writes very intelligently drawing on philosphy, psychology, reseach, religion, literature and on her own battle with these issues. She told me to focus on the end results not the job in hand. A serene home is a great motivator. She also talked about rewards. Today I cleaned the bathroom floor (properly!) my reward was 4 gold choclate coins and a big cup of tea and a phone call to my best friend. Whislt doing it I visualised how fabulous it would feel too finally have done it and how lovely it would look when my guests came.  Both worked…I actually did it!!

Danielle also considers blocks to housework in chapters dedicated to feeling
overwhelmed, injustice, futility, no energy, boredom, inferiority and superiority and lack of motivation. Yep she covers it all and suggets lots of stratergies to overcome and sound reasons such as good health and pride to encourage you through. A brilliant much needed book!

I like hoovering because you can see when a floor is messy and when it's clean.

I actually like de-cluttering – the room feels so much bigger when you have moved all the accumulated junk and given it a good dust. Plus, you have more room for more junk – at least, that's how it works in my house.

  4. I like to clear out the kitchen cupboards – several black bags of out of date goods later I feel renewed!

  5. I love blitzing the house on a weekend when hubby takes the kids to his mums fir a couple of hours. I stay in my PJs and go for it! I love the feeling of control and calmness once it's done. My reward? A soak in the bath after all that scrubbing! 😉 @emmacollinspr

  6. hoovering

  7. Love hearing the clunks of heavier crumbs being sucked up the hoover! @maisietoo

  8. missielizzie says:

I love cleaning the bath. Although perhaps that's because I'm secretly hoping for a 'chocolat' moment! Lol – have you seen the film? ;0)

My favourite part of housework? When everything is shoved in the cupboards, I've waved the mop around, the kitchen has had a cursory wipe over, and the washing pile is less than 10 feet. Then I can sit and put my feet up kidding myself that I am an actual domestic goddess and pray that it lasts longer than two minutes 😉

  10. I actually like washing up, clearing away the tat and wiping round the kitchen surfaces and the kitchen table, I spend 90% of my time at home in the kitchen – usually at the table with my laptop… so having a clean, tidy space to sit in is very soothing.
The rest of the house can be in rack and ruin but as long as my domain is sorted I can sit here and enjoy it!

Folding washing – i like smoothing the clothes – and i watch junky tv when i do it.

  12. Sitting down with a nice cuppa once everything is clean and tidy.

  13. Ellen Arnison says:

My favourite thing is picking the fluff out of the dryer filter. The more the better. I have considered collecting it.

  14. The best tip I have ever picked up is to spend the time it takes to boil the kettle to make tea tidying the kitchen. It is amazing what you can do in a couple of minutes.

  15. cchaudhry says:

I like changing the beds, then I can look forward to having lovely clean sheets when i go to bed that night

  16. I like cleaning the bathroom because then it looks all sparkly and shiny with gleaming taps and the towels hanging straight … I always look at it when finished because I know next time I'm in there it will be back to normal!

  17. What a great idea for a book!
I think my favourite thing is hoovering. It's not too time-consuming, and you see a difference instantly. It can transform a room! (of course to be able to hoover you also need to clear the floor of toys, so I don't often hoover as much as I should, though I'm always happier once I've done it!)

  18. I have always loved hoovering. I even did a school project on the hoover when I was 15! I have just bought a new hoover and am loving getting to grips with it!

I would *love* this book! I actually made a video for a recent competition (I didn't win!) with my top housework tips:

….my favourite chore is hoovering whilst singing along to very loud music!

  20. I get the most satisfaction from cleaning the bathroom, when everything looks bright, white and gleaming and smells really fresh. I couldn't enjoy a relaxing soak in the bath if it wasn't all 'spa like' and clean.

  21. Not a Career Girl says:

I love the lovely puffy snuggly clean bed after all the douvet wrestling – worth he effort!

  22. I wouldn't say it's my favourite part (I have 4 kids!) but I do advocate always immediately washing and keeping the dishes, the difference it makes to the look of a kitchen is unbelievable.

  23. i like dusting, i like to see everything gleaming and spotless

  24. Josephine says:

It may be sad but I love ironing! I can watch TV or listen to my favourite CD at the same time so it doesn't feel like a chore. (I do only iron the front of everything though! Mwahaha)

  25. It's a good time to do some excercise when you're hoovering

  26. I like to brush the carpet with a carding comb, makes it look like new and it's quite therapeutic, I probably look like a lunatic doing it though!

  27. I quite enjoy pegging out the washing on a lovely sunny day. Makes me feel all 1950s housewifey!

  28. FruityTutti says:

Hoovering – I always think of Monica from the TV series FRIENDS spinning around on it! I find hoovering I always work up a sweat! Great for losing weight and I can always lie down on the nice clean carpet afterwards for a rest though!

I like mopping the floor. I always mop to my favourite songs and get quite a rhythm going! And I always mop myself into the corner by the kettle and have a cuppa while I`m waiting for the floor to dry Xx

  30. dayslikethese says:

I rather like cleaning the toilet, something about scrubbing around with the loo brush.

    @StomeFreeBuddie

  31. I don't mind ironing at all .. i do it daily so it doesn't build up.

  32. my favourite bit to doing housework is when it is finished. It is so satisfying to see the results of the hard work and enjoy the results. Sometimes knowing how good it will look after is my only motivation!!

  33. giving the whole house a good clean once a week and you feel so much more comfortable

  34. Mrs Doubtfire. Well, that makes me want to Hoover!! Actually, I was scared witless of the hoover when I was a wee 'un, but now it's therapy. It makes the house the look great (unless it's spitting out dust because the bag's full) and there's that smeel associated with my 20-year old Hoover that I love so much.

  35. I love washing up I find it really theraputic for some reason!

  36. straysuzi says:

I love the feel of new clean sheets on the bed and always have to be the first one to get in after they have been changed … I try to do it on nights my hubby is working late !

  37. I’ve recently started a blog, the information you provide on this site has helped me tremendously. Thank you for all of your time & work.
